We ran the obvious question through the free FreeTier Finder: which AI writing tools have a free tier? The answer came back empty, and unusually honest about it: "No tool in this category has a free tier recorded in the AIToolGuide dataset. That is a gap in the data, not proof that none exists, and the Finder will not fill it with guesses." Twenty tools in the category have no free tier recorded and are not ranked.

An empty answer is still an answer if you read it properly. Here is how to use a result like this one.

1. Start category research here, not on a search results page

Listicles recycle each other's claims. The Finder only repeats what its own dataset records, with the evidence quoted. For AI writing that means starting from the recognition that nothing is verified free, then reading the category properly: our AI writing tool showdown covers the names people actually compare.

2. Read "not recorded" as a data gap, never as a verdict

The 20 unranked tools are not accused of anything. Some may run free plans this dataset has not captured. The Finder says so instead of padding the list, which is why its non-empty answers are worth trusting.

3. Use the not free list as a price floor

Below the empty ranking, the result shows the lowest listed starting prices in the category so the page does not look emptier than the category is: TextCortex from $6.99 a month, Koala AI from $9 a month and Rytr from $9 a month, as listed in the dataset. That is your realistic floor for AI writing today, per recorded data, not a recommendation.

4. Keep trials in a separate mental bucket

When a category does return tools, trial-only entries rank below real free tiers and are labeled as trials. The distinction matters for budgeting, and it is the same line drawn in free vs paid AI tool apps.

5. Ask which kind of free a tool means

Listed at $0, credited by a verdict, trial only, or nothing recorded: four different claims wearing one word. The Finder separates them; do the same in every pricing page you read afterwards. It also never invents an allowance: no words-per-month figures appear, because the dataset does not publish them.

6. Then budget the paid decision properly

If free is genuinely off the table in your category, the question becomes which paid tier earns it: our flagship price comparison does that for chat tools, and the big tools publish their tiers plainly (see ChatGPT pricing).
