Run the question through our FreeTier Finder and it returns an empty list. Not a short list, not a list with caveats: none of the 11 AI image generators in the AIToolGuide dataset has a free tier recorded. Other roundups will happily name nine free generators, with daily limits and watermark rules for each. Both answers come from data; they are just different data, kept to different rules. This page shows ours, explains the rule that empties the list, and then does the useful thing anyway: it prices the cheapest real entry points, by the job you are hiring the tool to do.
The 11 image generators in our dataset, at their recorded prices
The dataset behind this site holds 192 tools and 210 head-to-head comparisons. Its AI image generation category holds 11 tools, each with a recorded starting price and a recorded best use. A free tier appears in this table only if a comparison verdict in the dataset credits the tool with one. None does.
| Tool | Starting price in the dataset | Free tier recorded | Recorded best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photoroom | $7.50/mo | No | Sellers who need instant background removal for listings |
| Flair.ai | $8/mo | No | Brands shooting on-brand product scenes without a studio |
| Ideogram | $8/mo | No | Creators prioritizing readable text and lower cost |
| Freepik AI Suite | $9/mo | No | Budget creators who want stock, vectors and AI generation together |
| Krea AI | $9/mo | No | Designers who want real-time generation and rapid iteration |
| Adobe Firefly | $9.99/mo | No | Adobe users who need commercially safe AI images |
| Midjourney | $10/mo | No | Artists and designers chasing the best-looking AI art |
| Leonardo.Ai | $12/mo | No | Designers needing editing tools, models and API access |
| Recraft | $12/mo | No | Designers who need clean vector illustrations and branded graphics |
| Picsart AI | $13/mo | No | Social creators who want a full creative editing toolkit |
| DALL-E 3 | $20/mo | No | ChatGPT users who want prompt-faithful images in a conversation |
Why the Finder will not fill the gap with guesses
The Finder ranks a tool for free use only three ways: the dataset lists it at $0, a dataset verdict credits it with an ongoing free tier, or a verdict credits it with a free trial only, which ranks last and is labeled a trial. Everything else is not ranked, and the tool says so on its face: a gap in the data is not proof that no free tier exists, and the Finder will not fill it with guesses. That rule is the whole product. It produced the same honest answer for AI writing tools, where the recorded free tier count is also zero, and it is why the Finder explainer leads with the rule instead of a list.
What the other roundups report, and why the answers differ
Live roundups of free generators, Morphed's is a thorough one, report free access for several names in our table, Ideogram at a handful of slow credits a week among them, and they rank generators our dataset does not hold as standalone tools at all, including the image features bundled inside chatbots. Nothing there is necessarily wrong. Free tiers are marketing instruments: they open, shrink and close without notice, and a roundup written from vendor pages this month can be accurate and still useless by the next quarter. Our dataset was built from comparison verdicts and recorded starting prices, a slower record that simply never caught a free tier being credited to any of these 11. Treat the two kinds of page as answers to different questions: theirs, what can I use free today; ours, what does a recorded comparison history support.
If nothing is free, what is cheap, by job
Product photos on a budget: Photoroom from $7.50 a month is the category's lowest recorded start, and its recorded strength, background removal for listings, is the exact job most sellers are hiring for. Flair.ai at $8 covers styled product scenes. Text inside images: Ideogram from $8, the dataset's verdict pick for readable text, detailed in our Midjourney vs Ideogram comparison. The best-looking art: Midjourney from $10 remains the recorded benchmark for raw quality, the same verdict our Midjourney vs DALL-E comparison reached from another angle. Control and production features: Leonardo.Ai from $12, recorded for its canvas, model training and API. And if free is a hard requirement rather than a preference, our free alternatives to Midjourney comparison covers the tools readers usually land on, with their limits stated.
When the free tier is the wrong question
A free tier answers how a tool earns its first week of your attention, not what a month of finished work costs. The honest comparison is cost per finished asset: generations you keep, divided into the plan price, with the failed and exploratory generations counted, because you pay for those too. On that measure the $8 tool whose text renders correctly the first time is cheaper than a free tier that needs nine retries and a watermark removal step. Ask the free question to build a shortlist. Ask the finished-asset question to pick.
Frequently asked questions
So no AI image generator is free? That is not what our data says. It says none of the 11 generators in our dataset has a free tier recorded in it. Several tools offer free access that our comparison record never credited; the Finder reports the gap instead of guessing across it.
Why is the list empty when other sites list nine free tools? Different evidence. Roundups read current vendor pages; our Finder reads a fixed dataset of 210 comparison verdicts and starting prices. Free tiers change faster than comparison datasets are rebuilt.
What is the cheapest AI image generator in the dataset? Photoroom, from $7.50 a month, followed by Flair.ai and Ideogram at $8. Cheapest is job-dependent: the section above matches the low prices to the work each tool is recorded as best for.
Does the Finder rank free trials? Yes, last, and labeled as trials, because a trial is not a free tier. In this category no tool is credited with even a trial in the dataset, so the ranking is empty rather than padded.
